BLACK METAL 2 ANNOUNCED!

So... Black Metal 2 is coming out October 5th. I had been dying to put up some previews, or at least drop a hint, but we kept it all hush hush until now. You can head over to Comic Book Resources to see a 25 page preview. CHECK IT OUT HERE!

But for something really special, why not grab the latest issue of Decibel Magazine which also publishes my monthly strip Stone Cold Lazy. In the latest issue, it's all comics & metal. There is also a pretty awesome preview of a later scene in Black Metal 2(see pic above, handsome I know)! The mag is always great, and this time its especially comic art friendly, with a beautiful fold out cover by Tom Neely. Click here for more info!

BRUTAL!!!

I've been excited for Brutal Legend for a while now and I got a chance to play around with it at E3, it is just awesome. Now with all the hype building up before its release, I decided I should do a little doodle based on the lead character, Eddie Riggs(Named after Eddie from Iron Maiden, and the artist who created him, not after Mel Gibson's character in Lethal Weapon)!
Special thanks to Commando Ivan Brando for color suggestions, as well as Steven "Pacify" perkins!

Wow!

So...I won the Eisner!!! It's absolutely crazy. Congrats to the entire 5 Crew (Becky, Vasilis, Rafael, Fabio, and Gabriel!) Those two Brazilians were the belles of the ball so congrats to them. Thanks to all the nominees in my category, especially Matt Silady who took time to come by the Oni booth and congratulate me. in my opinion, the nomination is the real win, that's more true in the Eisner's than elsewhere, for various reasons. I can't lie, though, it feels great. Most of all I have to really thank Rick, because without him I'd not have been allowed to get all crazy with the art, this award really represents our collaborative hard work.

In other news, check this Vinyl Vader toy I customized - here's a video. Mine is called "Vade to White." But even better than mine are the mutany of other awesome custom Vaders.

STONE COLD LAZY

So a few months ago Decibel Magazine asked me to do a monthly strip for their rag. This months issue see's the printing of the first strip! SO GO GET IT, GUY (or Gal)!!! It's got Halford on the cover, that should entice those of you who need that sort of enticing.
The Strip is called STONE COLD LAZY. it's a strip that is basically about two buddies aka brothers of metal. tape trading, metal head elitists, who enjoy beer and bullet belts. There will be quite a few additional characters in the strips, but those are the two buddies.
So get off your buttocks and ride your harley over to the nearest news stand and get your dose of Decibel and STONE COLD LAZY!!!

What I listens to?

I've been a bad blogger as of Late, but that just means I've been busy. I've got nothing I can show right now, but I'll have a few announcements down the road that should perk someones fancy if not my own. but for now, here's a list of tunes that I've been doodling to as of late. My reviews are all encompassing, you will require no further coaxing!

Genghis Tron
Board Up The House

This may be a contender for best album of the year. Not only is the album killer, but the live show was even more intense. This is like Grindy Nasty Electro Metal at its finest, with really refined beats, great melodies, and gimmick free. Groove laden brutal fun for all ages!

Leviathan
Massive Conspiracy Against All Life

Leviathan… bay area drone-ish black as night metal. What need I say more than that?

Anaal Nathrakh
Hell is Empty and all the Devils are Here

Anaal is as tight as ever (wink.) This is actually one of my more favorite of their albums, just because the songs are more concise, a little more hook oriented, but still as nasty and brutal as they come. It’s good fast brutality. They will play in here in LA in 2 days, and I’m fairly excited, cant wait.

Torche
Meanderthal

I’m feeling a lot of Helmetness and Isisery here, and in one song a touch of Celtic Frost’s pounding. This is really good stuff. Nothing that’s too invasive, just pretty smooth and heavy.

Brown Jenkins
Angel Eyes

To Tell you the truth I haven’t listened to this one enough to know if it will be in my heart forever, but so far I really dig it. It’s dark and sludgy, but very much in the family of Black Metal. It’s got an element of shoegazery-orchestration to it that I really enjoy, but with all the low production value of a good garage tape.

CYNIC
FOCUS

An Oldy but a goody, this sucker has been pulled out of the archives and back into my daily routine. I was reading that they will be doing a new album, I hope it’s smooth. But if you’ve never heard this… and you like good proggy-spacey death metal with vocoders… maybe you should probably have already owned this.

VOTE FOR CHUCKO!

ROCK THE VOTE!
I’ve been nominated for an Eisner, for the category of “Special Recognition.” Which I’m told is the category formerly known as “Talent Deserving of Wider Recongition.” But here’s the thing, the winner is determined by votes! The votes of comic professionals and retailers… so this is my call to arms! Go to the website and vote for me!

Thanks again you great people you!

A taste of Black Metal to come!

Here's a little something to wet your appetites. This is an illustration I did for the Oni Press Holiday compilation that never happened. Boo hoo. Rest assured, i am plugging away on Black Metal Volume 2, and as soon as I can show you something, i will. for now, enjoy Shawn adorned in his holiday robe, as he sits down with a nice cold tumbler, and soothes his soul with the smooth satanic melodies of Frost Axe!

I've been nominated for an EISNER?!?!

Yeah, What? Wow. I've been nominated for an Eisner award, in the category of Special Recognition for my work on Black Metal. To those not in the know, the Eisner awards are likened to the Oscars of comics, and I'm incredibly honored, and excited to have even been considered. I'm not entirely sure what Special Recognition means, but I've been told its something like Best New Talent, or Talent most deserving of wider recognition. There are some awesome nominees this year, so I'm excited to be included in it. blah blah blah, this is too crazy. I don't expect to win, but it feels nice to be recognized. So many thanks to go around, but i think for now i will squarely pin my thanks on my Co-Creator Writery Dude, Rick Spears... thanks dood!

Under the moon... the wolves gather.

Last piece in my 3 piece set of Black Metal/Post Bm/Whatever boundary pushers. My heroes, ever evolving, Ulver!...

Here's the pencil sketch.

Hopefully I'm doing some justice.

28.3.08

Sigh.

I've been listening to alot of Sigh's album Hangmans Hymn this weekend, so I thought I'd throw this piece up. I have 2 more in the pantheon of Metal Musicians/Groups who I think are pushing the genre far beyond, or completely out of its label, but those are for later! All hails to Sigh and their thrashy synth production excellence!

Busy Wolves

My favorite Pack of Musical Wolves, ULVER have begun to bleed out some sounds from their forthcoming album, they just put up the track "Vigil" on their myspace, which as a friend I will require you to listen to... and if you haven't heard their other songs there's a good pallet of samples there to tune your furry ears to. This song has got me undeniably excited for their new masterpiece "Shadows of the Sun."

Mood: ULVER!!!
